Muzaffarabad, August 28 (ANI): The agricultural situation in Pakistan-administered Kashmir is deteriorating due to high fertilizer prices, the removal of subsidies, irrigation system issues, water scarcity, and expensive seeds.
Former Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Pervez Ahmed, highlighted these challenges, stating, "If one visits the Neelum Valley and other areas of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, they will find that regions once abundant with apple orchards have gradually lost their appeal due to the high maintenance costs associated with these farms. Consequently, the government has shown diminishing interest in supporting them."
He emphasized the government's responsibility to care for these orchards and to raise awareness among the younger generation about their importance.
Ahmed also pointed out the struggles faced by rice farmers in the region, noting that the high costs of seeds and fertilizers have led to a decline in rice cultivation. "There was a time when rice farming flourished in PoJK, but now, due to the exorbitant prices of seeds and fertilizers—ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 rupees per bag—farmers are reluctant to purchase these essential supplies. All these prices are set by the Ministry of Agriculture in Pakistan."
He urged the government to reduce the costs of seeds and fertilizers and to reinstate subsidies, which could encourage more individuals to re-engage in agriculture.
Farmers in Pakistan-administered Kashmir are facing significant challenges that impact their livelihoods and agricultural productivity. Key issues include low income, debt, outdated farming practices, and limited access to modern resources. Infrastructure problems, such as inadequate irrigation and poor market access, further exacerbate their difficulties.
Additionally, climate change and natural disasters pose risks to crop yields. Government support is often insufficient, with gaps in agricultural policies and limited assistance provided to those in need.
Irregular rainfall and reduced glacial melt have also affected the availability of irrigation water. (ANI)
